The upcoming EPBD recast recommends that architects and planners utilize 3D-based modelling and simulation technologies throughout the planning, design, construction, and renovation phases of residential areas to enhance and assess building energy performance. Integrating BIM models with simulation tools can improve the assessment of building performance and support renovation efforts.
These digital technologies are particularly beneficial for creating building renovation passports and digital building logbooks, while incorporating smart readiness indicators and life-cycle global warming in building performance simulations. Assessing building performance with these tools enables a more comprehensive evaluation over time and facilitates the transition from one-off certification to continuous performance assessment.
This webinar will offer insights into using BIM models to generate EPCs for both new buildings and successive renovation stages throughout their lifespan. Practical cases will demonstrate the capabilities of available technologies.

Explore the upcoming transformations and requirements within the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), with a special focus on Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Building Renovation Passports. This revision is set to become a pivotal legislative instrument to achieve the decarbonisation goals outlined by the EU. Notably, it obliges Member States to formulate national plans, which require all new constructions to achieve zero emissions from January 1, 2030. Moreover, a standardised template will be introduced for universal adoption across EU nations, streamlining the assessment of building performance and fostering cross-national comparisons. Stay tuned for an in-depth understanding of these pivotal changes.

The session will focus on the use of digital technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and simulation tools to enhance building energy performance assessment and support renovation efforts. It will emphasize the utilization of BIM models for generating EPCs for both new buildings and renovation stages. Practical case studies will illustrate the capabilities of these technologies. Additionally, we will explain how to integrate various domains involved in building renovation, such as acoustics, fire safety, measurements, and budgeting, into the BIM models.

The development of a building model encompasses more than just creating a drawing; it involves translating the geometric and technical aspects of the building, such as the opaque envelope, transparent envelope, and thermal bridges, among others. To generate an EPC, it is recommended to incorporate such features during the architectural model creation to prevent the need for later revisions and potential errors. In this session, an illustration of building a 3D model using a BIM tool is presented, demonstrating the exchange of information with an EPC tool through an IFC file.

A thorough integration of BIM and EPC is a long-term objective which faces several obstacles, with interoperability between modelling and simulation tools being a significant challenge. To promote this integration using the available tools, in TIMEPAC we have developed a set of guidelines to generate and EPC from a digital model using current technologies. These guidelines can contribute to the development of standardized and reliable protocols for using BIM in energy performance certification across the European Union.

An inventory of the building is required to draw up a renovation passport including a renovation roadmap. Data is necessary also for other assessments such as SRI or Level(s) calculations, or a green building certification. Therefore, the collection and retrieval of building-related information in one place and its later update and for various assessment purposes is highly beneficial. This presentation explores the intersection with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the generation of Energy Performance Certificates (EPC), emphasising their interconnected roles in advancing energy-efficient and environmentally conscious renovation practices. The aim is to offer a forward-looking perspective regarding data availability, guiding stakeholders on the evolving landscape of renovation passports and their integral role in sustainable building practices.
